The ILL copy of _Ancillary Justice_ came yesterday and I'm halfway through it. I had seen people talking about it and had some idea what to expect: the main character's original language doesn't mark gender. The main character understands the concept but has a lot of trouble sorting it out by eye and will occaisionally say things like "I knew she was male" about people she knows well, but is often stressed about being stuck speaking a language that does mark gender around people who will be offended if she guesses wrong. Note that at this point I am halfway through the book and have no idea what gender the main character is. A couple of combinations of characters have been (it is implied) lovers and I have no idea what genders they are--and thus no idea whether they are (as we would put it) straight or gay.

And here's the thing--each time I realize this (and it comes in bursts; most of the time I just uncritically accept "she" and thus uncritically accept the relationships as gay), I realize it just doesn't matter. It doesn't matter to how I feel about the characters, or how they feel about each other, or what their motivations are.

It's messing with my head--but messing with my head in a way I find fun. Some people mess with their head with alcohol; maybe I mess with my head with books. I can see why people loved this book so much. (It recently won the Nebula, by the way.)

In other news, Kip and I finally moved the canoes out of the garage today. I can't seem to get started on the project I meant to do first, so I want to get started on another project because I'm starting to feel antsy about accomplishing so little. I need the workshop for the project I'd like to do, thus needed to move the canoes out of it. Storing the canoes in the garage kept them safe and out of the weather--but I guess we have as much bugs and dust in the garage as outside, and they need to be scrubbed down again. Also Constance needs her gunwales sanded and revarnished soon.

And the League is ramping up to do another candidates forum. I wish they didn't feel the need to have three separate elections in election year. What's wrong with two?

Oh, yeah, I just finished Ancillary Justice and really liked it. AIs who sing/ships who fall in love -- totally my thing. :D
