I asked Kip if he would love me if I were a mermaid.

He said absently "Yes.  We'd have to live near the coast.  You could be a lifeguard"

And I said "I would love you too, with my cold fishy heart.  And yes, I would be an excellent lifeguard."

So that's settled.

Could you not be a freshwater mermaid in the local lakes and rivers?

I think it's all terribly sweet, though, anyway :-)

Well, yes, I could, if I were a freshwater or anadromous mermaid. Which would open up a lot more of the continent to our settlement.
