Thomas Jefferson, Fredrick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King most certainly did set out to change the world--they were activists with large-scale goals. One of the goals of the practice of the scientific, engineering, and medical research disciplines is changing the world, though usually the changes are smaller than those made by Cat's list of greats.
