Yesterday was the Carson-Newman Outdoor Club's annual Holston River Fall Colors Float. For such a long name the premise is pretty simple--they get together all the canoes and kayaks they can scrape up (including several that belong to the Outdoor Club) and canoe down the Holston River (the river that is dammed to produce Cherokee Lake (which Panther Creek runs into at Panther Creek State Park).

I'd been planning to go--I'd been looking forward to it since I heard about it. Alas, when I got up I discovered my back was bad. I'd already promised Larry (the guy in charge) that I would bring my canoe, so I pottered about the house, getting ready. I had Kip help me put the canoe on the car (the canoe is normally stored in the rafters of the garage; lowering it onto the roof of the car is no strain on my back to speak of). I drove it out to the starting point.

It was a beautiful fall day, sunny and warm and clear. The trees were decorating the hills with puffs of orange and brown and gold. But as I drove, and as I waited for the others to show up (I was so eager I was 45 minutes early) my back got worse and worse. By the time everyone else showed up I was in so much pain I couldn't wait to ditch the canoe with Larry and go home.

Kip was very supportive when I staggered in the door and laid down. He went off to get me caffeine-free diet Mountain Dew and chocolate, he made dinner, he came in periodically to see if he could get me anything and just generally pampered me.

I'm supposed to get my canoe back sometime in the next few days when I feel better. Sniff.

I hope I'm better enough today to go to my mandolin lesson; I missed last week's because I was so exhausted after OVFF. I'm getting pretty good at Little Rabbit--but I'm ready to work on something else now.

What a disappointment! It sounds like a lovely event. But hurray for pampering.

Hope you feel better soon...

Thanks. Me too :-( I just called to cancel my mando lesson for today--I can't bear to be out of bed for more than half an hour at a time.

Ouch! I hope you feel better - is there a pattern to what causes the pain? That might be one way to approach preventing it. Just waking up in pain doesn't sound like a helpful clue, though. :(

So sorry to hear about your back forcing you to miss the fall colours float. (oops, American trip so that would be fall "colors" *g*) It sounds like it would have been lovely!

Hope you're feeling better soon!

No obvious pattern, alas. In general it seems like exercise is good, doing my back exercises is good, sitting or standing slumped is bad... standard stuff. I don't know why things went south all of a sudden on Sunday.

Sigh. And wouldn't it have been nicer with a "u" (that is, a "me") in it, too. Thanks for the sympathy. Working on the feeling better part--I don't know if the pain is less or if I've just gotten used to spending most of the time lying down. It seems less this morning.
