Nov. 7th, 2003 03:34 pmThree things in this room (the Troll's Lair) that make me smile.
1) Taliesin, the iBook that my brother gave us as a wedding present, and on which I'm presently typing this entry. It is my writing pad, my theater and my connection to the net--and thus to most of the world. Worth every penny of Jacob's money! :-)
2) My bent-shaft canoe paddle, presently hanging from my canoe paddle-board. Less amusing is the fact that it's the only paddle hanging there, the other four having been taken for the ill fated Fall Colors Float I ended up missing because my back was so bad. But the bent shaft paddle is a thing of beauty, smooth and gleaming, softly glowing wood pieced together in longitudinal strips.
3) The hermit crabs, Julian and Cassiodorus.
I think my back is slooowly getting better. I still have to lie down a lot, but on Wednesday I managed a load of dishes and a two block walk, on Thursday I managed a load of dishes, sweeping four rooms and a four block walk (plus an extra four block walk to and from the post office at a different time), and today I've managed a six block walk. No dishes or anything yet, however.
On the other hand, maybe I'm just getting less afraid of the pain. :-( I still can only stand to practice mandolin about 10 minutes at a time.
Maybe I should go through other rooms of the house looking for things that make me smile.

Cheers.

Shucks. It's very kind of you to say so. I just try not to post when I get too depressed. And focussing on cheerful things is one way to avoid focussing on anxieties that only make me feel worse.
I actually practice more like 20 minutes a day--I just have to do it in a couple of sessions. Fortunately my days are unstructured enough that I can do that. I didn't practice much for quite some time before we started gearing up to work on From The Hazel Tree, but now that I've decided to actually take lessons, not practicing would be wasting my money. And I purely hate wasting my money :-)
