So I haven't been writing much lately (well, I've actually been writing rather a lot) I haven't been *posting* much lately because my life has been eaten by a couple of concerts that haven't even happened yet.
I've been so terrified--erm, *inspired* by the prospect of giving a concert (two concerts! unless I end up just teaching the kids a few songs; I'm not clear yet on what people want) at CapriCon that I've been practicing a lot, trying to build up my vocal stamina to where I *can* sing for an hour (which I can now mostly do), and get my repertoire arranged and practiced up.
And all that playing and singing and scratching my head over my set list combined with a couple of other factors and I wound up writing a song about Dave (mostly based on the poem I posted).
And then I realized I had a Childrens' Concert (or maybe I was going to teach a song to children) and I remembered a funny post in zencuppa's journal from a few years ago (wow, have I really been doing livejournal that long?) and I wrote another.
And then I remembered that Lois McMaster Bujold was going to be a guest at Capricon and I dug back into my computer files, and sure enough I had this idea for a song about Paladin of Souls; just a part of a verse and a chorus, but maybe I should stare at it for a bit... and I wrote another.
And then I thought I could sure use some more material if they want me to do a children's concert, and I remembered a song idea I had from our Outer Banks trip last summer, and I combed through the computer files, and hmm; I could finish that, and I wrote another.
And then while I was back among those old files I noticed one with a title I only vaguely recognized, so I opened it up, and hey, this is pretty good; it only needs a last verse and a melody, and I wrote another.
And while I was there I noticed a fun little song that I wrote back in.. 97 or so? but never performed, and I pulled it out for the Children's concert.
And I remember an idea I had for a Terry Pratchett song---but that way lies madness. Must...practice...new material!
I have entered more songs in NotePad in the last month than I did in my entire life previous. NotePad is getting easier to use. You can't specify the number of measures per line (which is annoying) but guess what? You can specify the lyric font size. And when you change the lyric font size, you change the number of measures per line.
BTW--Bill, Gretchen? if you've read this far, do you want me to teach songs to children? Or do you want a Children's Concert? I am prepared to dodge either way, even at the last minute; I'm just wondering.
