Moving this month
Feb. 3rd, 2009 08:14 pmAs of this morning, Kip and I are proud owners of a new (to us) house. Well, technically we own about a third of it.
It is on the side of a hill, about 20 minutes walk from Kip's work. It is one story, with a crawlspace. It is speckldy-brick on the outside (kind of ugly, actually) but quite nice on the inside. My project for the next while is going to be The House. Hopefully it will not take as long as the canoe did.
The melting snow this afternoon made it plain that the gutters need to be fixed; they are not doing their guttery job. That will probably call for a professional. There is also a partly dead tree in the yard; the dead bits need to come out before they fall on our house or the house next door. That will probably also call for a professional.
I want to have the kitchen redone to raise the counters to my height. I hope to reuse as much as possible of the stuff that's already there, as I like most of it just fine. That will also call for a professional. It will also be very expensive so it may have to wait.
However, stuff like fixing the folding ladder to the attic access I can probably do. And fixing the bathroom cupboard doors that won't close because some clever soul painted them and the paint makes them just that little bit too big, I can do. Putting in ground fault interrupter plugs in the kitchen and bathroom, I may be able to do. Moving the loose junk out of the crawlspace, putting the floor insulation back up, ripping off the rotting insulation on the air ducts and replacing it--that I can do. Repainting the bedrooms---I mean, brown? What were they thinking?--I may be able to do.
Whether I can do the painting before we move stuff in; that's another question. I want to be out of the old place by the end of February because I don't want to be responsible for double bills any longer than that. I have already gotten the electric, gas, water/sewer/trash bills in our name. I don't even want to think about how many places I have to inform about our change of address.
We will be moving this month. Things will be flaky. You have been warned.
