In recent days we have been treated to the odd spectacle of various well known Republicans arguing that they oppose the stimulus package, or President Obama's budget, for the sake of fiscal responsibility.

My reaction is, "Look, bub, you didn't say a word when the Republican administration was squandering our surplus on tax cuts heavily tilted toward those who needed the money least, tax cuts that emphatically didn't fix our economy after eight long years.  You didn't say a word when the Republican administration was increasing our deficit on one war caused by its own willfull disregard of a clear and present danger they were repeatedly warned about, and a second war caused by its lies.  You didn't say a word about the Republican administration's disgraceful smoke-and-mirrors "budgeting" that made their deficits look smaller than they really were.  You don't get to lecture me about fiscal responsiblity now.

Or rather, you get to lecture me as much as your own sense of shame will let you, but don't imagine you will get a free pass on people commenting on your hypocrisy.

And in the meantime, there's a good article here that explains the difference between acting responsibly about one's own finances (living within one's means in difficult times) and acting responsibly about the economy (generating more demand when lack of demand is strangling the economy) that helps lay out why it's a good idea for the government to consume more in this particular downturn.
