Or at least my canoe(s).

I went canoeing today.  I had promised myself a canoe trip Saturday but it didn't work out because I ended up spending that time getting my flat tire fixed instead.  Then there were several days when the weather was not rotten enough to complain about, but certainly not warm enough to make canoeing a good idea.  Then there was today, high temp nearly 70 degrees, and sunny, and there was me, and my canoe...

So I left the half planked one sitting in the garage and took Patience out for her first swim of 2010.  The lake is still so low that the bottom of the boat ramp near my house is high and dry.  However a couple of weeks ago I made the acquaintance of someone who lives on that road, who said I could use his yard to launch, since his yard still had a bit of lake.

So I did.   I launched at about 2 in the afternoon, which gave me time to catch up on some house chores (it being an equally good day to do laundry) and put a couple of planks on the half finished canoe before I set out.  The lake shores feature lots of dried mud, with interesting shaped stones poking out here and there, because the local limestone is in the process of being rotted out by the new (70 years old or so) lake.  There were some mallards and some dark almost blueish duckish birds I didn't recognize.  However they kept flying away before I could get close enough to get a good look.  They make a very distinctive wings-flapping-feet-slapping-water kind of noise as they go.

The shore of the lake changes quite a bit when the level of the water is 20 feet lower than the last time I went.  Former islands were peninsulas.  Former blank stretches of water were islands.  Some were just blobs of mud and gravel but one included what was obviously the foundations of a former house, retired by the dam.  The afternoon was full of little chuckles and slurps as the water talked to the canoe and the paddle talked to the water.

And after canoeing I found the dohickey that recharges my camera battery.  So there won't be pictures of the canoe trip, but there will be pictures (tomorrow) of the canoe-in-progress.

I only canoed for a couple of hours but I'm tired. My arms are really out of shape.
