Insulation and Sales Jobs
Jul. 24th, 2010 05:40 pmI had a guy in here this morning, trying to sell me insulation for my attic. (To be fair, this was my fault; I have been thinking about improving the insulation for a while, so when someone came to the door yesterday to talk to me about it I said okay and set up an appointment for 10 this morning. Which I had forgotten about by 10 this morning so I was outside sanding the canoe--which impressed the salesman mightily, unless he was just trying to flatter me.)
He made a bunch of claims for how much money it would save me, (which at the time sounded great but looking back on it seem overblown) but lost me when he started pressuring me to sign up today. If it's really a good deal it will be a good deal tomorrow or next week, and the kind of money he was asking was way beyond my level for an impulse buy. But if I would sign up today they would do it for 25% off. I dug in my heels--I come out in metaphorical hives if I'm pressured with that kind of money involved. The salesman called his boss--the boss offered me 40% off. I still wouldn't budge. I was not, by gum, going to drop that kind of money without checking my other options.
The salesman went away. (After Kip called to me not to forget our appointment in Jefferson City (wink, wink).) I went to Lowes and looked at the insulation there. I'm pretty sure I could insulate the attic to today's recommended standards (R49 here) for about a third of the lowest price the salesman quoted me.
I'm glad I dug in my heels. I need to figure out what I'm going to do; what I can do myself and what I need to hire done, but I don't think I'll be going with that company.
