The tech called me around 11 am.  The problem was worse than she originally thought; one of the interior braces is loose.  (Peter calls them tone bars.)  She doesn't have the right sized clamp to fix it.  She said it might be possible to take the top off and fix it that way, but without knowing what kind of glue was used in Pearl's construction, she didn't dare try that.  It looks like I won't have Pearl fixed in time for GaFilk.

Thanks to some encouragement from Peggi Warner-Lalonde, I talked to Peter Cox (the person who made Pearl) on the phone.  He said that he'd fix her for free if we just lived close enough together to make that feasible (unfortunately he's about 15 hours drive north of me) but that he thought it likely the other repair shop in the area (a place called The Parlour) can make the fix.  He told me what kind of glue he'd used, in case the folks at The Parlour needed to know, and said that if I couldn't get her fixed before FKO I should bring her up and he would fix her, and if necessary put me up on his couch for a night or two while the glue dried until she was safe to travel again.  He said when I get her back I should reduce the pitch of her strings by about a fourth to reduce the stress on the body until she can be fixed.  He said he'd only seen a similar problem a couple of times before and in both cases it was a mandolin of his someone had sat on by mistake.  He agreed that it might be humidity changes--it *has* been awfully dry in the house for a while because it has been so cold.

I called The Parlour (I called them Friday night, but went with Rush Music instead because the folks at The Parlour didn't think they could have her done by Thursday afternoon) and they said they would look at her and let me know what they thought was wrong and if they could fix her.  The roads were icy today, but if they're better tomorrow I'll pick her up from Rush and take her to The Parlour.

In other news Kip kindly walked to Carson Newman with me and logged me onto the wifi there--and thanks to his kindness I got all 20 of the songs on Dr. Faber's Medicine Show uploaded to Bandcamp in half an hour instead of taking all day.  So I got more done today than I expected.
