May. 7th, 2014 07:50 amSo, I have mostly been recovering from FKO, which is a great con but after driving 2 days to get there and 2 days to get back I was understandably a little wiped. Also preparing for Marcon, which believe it or not has mostly been carried on the last couple of years of regular practice because I only started actually choosing and practicing the Marcon set this week and that has been okay.
Also there is a Steampunk day-festival of some sort in Knoxville in about a month and I thought I'd check with them and see if they'd like a concert, and the local library asked me to give a concert at the end of June for (gasp) an audience that includes grown ups, which is not the usual library request.
I am rather behind on putting up new songs. FAWM was a bit of a stretch--and I wrote stuff after that but have not actually had the spoons to record; I should fix that.
My back went out for a few days and in desperation I went back on the meloxicam, which isn't giving me much stomach trouble yet. My back is now noticeably better and I'm going to taper off the meloxicam and go back on the Tylenol, thus hopefully avoiding the stomach trouble as much as possible and saving the meloxicam for when I really need it (not that it's hard to get, since I have health insurance and it's an NSAID, rather than something that can make people high.) I'm not sure what made my back go out, though, since I had no trouble until several days after I got home and thus the long drive was probably not the issue.
Since the Hugos thing I have been reading rather a lot. I can hardly wait for the Hugo packet to go out--some of the trolls I've seen infesting other people's pages have made me anxious to start my homework. In the meantime I've been hunting through the internet for some of the freely available work by some of the nominated authors and also for some of the works recommended in an "If you liked X on the Hugo Ballot, you'll probably like this also" kind of way. Extra credit reading, if you like.
The trolls like to claim "the literati" (has anyone seen one of these?) are lying about liking some of these works. Well, people are going to think things that are wrong sometimes, and there's nothing you can do about that. But I really enjoyed "The Cartographer Wasps and The Anarchist Bees" by E. Lily Yu (Campbell finalist--winner, I think--a couple of years ago.) And I just finished _Ascension: A Tangled Axon_ by Jacqueline Koyanagi, and that was pretty good too. They make you think more than a shoot-em-up thriller does, and so they wouldn't suit me if I was tired and out of sorts and just wanted some distraction to soothe me before bedtime, but the idea that books by/about minorities, women gay people, etc mean abandoning hope for a good story is a trollish myth.
