Kind Of Alarming
Oct. 20th, 2011 07:43 amAmong the Republican would-be presidential candidates, there is only one that is willing to come out and say evolution is real.
Perfectly understandable, of course; the present state of the Republican party is such that admitting to believing in the basic organizing principle of biology is pretty much the kiss of death--and it's probably no coincidence that Huntsman is running way at the back of the pack in the polls. (If you are Republican, by the way, I would like to encourage you to throw your support to Huntsman.)
This causes me some concern. It is way out of touch with reality. And some people try to tell you--oh, it's just the fringies, and the right fringe and left fringe are equally crazy, so the Democrats and Republicans are equally in touch with reality. Or not.
Well, maybe the fringes are equally crazy. Liberals have the anti-vaxxers, after all. But it's not the fringes that are going to run the country. And the only way the parties themselves, could be similarly crazy would be if it were the kiss of death for a Democratic candidate to admit that vaccination* works.
*Except of course that vaccination is less basic to biology than evolution. Evolution is like gravity, or atoms, or electricity. But no lefties are crazed enough to doubt those things and anti-vaxxers we *do* have, so I went with that.
