Well it's all work that I need to do, and I guess it doesn't matter that much whether I call it mixing or something else. Lacking a bettter word for it, I think I will continue to call it mixing but at least now you will know what I mean.
I am deeply glad it is no longer necessary to do the final combination of tracks on the fly as you seem to be describing; it sounds nerve wracking and very difficult to get right.
It is a pity you don't like mp3s and MP3 players; while I will be releasing my music in a lossless format, (the files are big, but you will get all the fidelity the mic recorded) I think mp3s have gone a long way to making music more accessible and easier to distribute, and I have lots of them and play them all the time. FWIW it's not like cassette tapes were noticeably better in terms of fidelity, I think, and it's not like I could afford vinyl, so in a sense they make my music (or at least the dream of releasing it) possible.
