Yesterday I was reading a lot of magazine reviews (yep, of the Kindle) and I got tired of waiting forever for the sites to download so I turned off the pictures.

The internet without pictures is a faster place--but it certainly looks different.  I'll probably turn them back on sometime today.

It is. The other thing that helps is running noscript or some similar tool. It is amazing how many different tracking sites want to run little scripts in your browser, and by the time it's run about seven of them, it may get to actually sending you the stuff you want to see. I've even started using it in my academic browser profile, despite the nuisance value of having to sometimes enable sites.

Why am I suddenly reminded of a science movie I saw in school when I was a kid, about "A World Without Friction?"
