Penske have good vehicles, and they are usually only a couple years old.

After a few moves using U-Haul, and having trucks with driving styles akin to drunk three-legged bovines, our last move using a 26' Penske truck and the help of our friends epawtowski, dpawtowski and catbunny (I highly recommend the assistance of friends who help haul conventions)

*nods* when we moved to this coast we loaded a 24' Penske gas van to the 23' mark, hitched a 125" auto dolly to the back, put jenkitty's 123"-wheelbase GMC Sonoma on it, and headed out.

As far as *running*, the Penske was great. Never gave us a hint of trouble. But I'll never rent a *gas* van for the long haul EVER again. The thing had NO torque; in the Texas and NM mesas I had to just floor it and leave it there, we'd come screaming down the back side of a mesa and hit about 75 at the bottom.... and by the time we'd struggle up to the top of the next one, we'd be doing about 35. *sigh* AND... we got a geology lesson in the process! Guess what, friends and neighbors, it's UPHILL, all the way from West Memphis, Arkansas, to just east of Albeqirky [sic], NM.

And then you go DOWN. The eastern base of the Sandias is at 8,000 feet or so at the continental divide, and Albequerque is at 5,000 and change. When it says, TRUCKS 35, it MEANS IT. We saw this IDIOT go screaming by us in an 18-wheeler, and we could see the flames coming off his back brakes. I'm REALLY surprised we didn't see him up the runaway ramp or in a smoking heap at the bottom. Me, I was smart, dropped the tranny into second, and did as I was told. Easy does it. Piece of problem, no cake. :) But next time? I want a diesel.

If there ever is a next time. Maybe moving a bunch of inherited stuff back thisaway...

I didn't realize that gas trucks had less omph than diesel. I surely did notice that the truck had less pickup than, say, a car, but I figured that was just how it is with trucks.

Moving from Spokane to Tennessee, I came over the Rockies myself and I just geared down into 2nd and took it easy and it worked okay. The spooky part for me was where they were doing road work for miles and miles and miles and shoved us over to run one lane coming and one lane going in what would normally be a one-way chunk of highway. They did it, like 4 times, and I think I only ran over 2 traffic cones... But I thought that was unfairly challenging for my second day of driving a truck.

Diesel engines don't necessarily have more horsepower, but they have more *torque* when under load, which means (much handwaving here) you don't have to gear down as far to get up the hill, and can, in practice, do it faster. (It was *really* discouraging to see fully-loaded 18-wheelers go screaming by at 55 when I'm sitting over here in the slow lane at 35 with my flashers on.... (Technically minimum speed on any Interstate highway is 40, unless posted faster...)

The fun part for me wasn't left-right alignment; I grokked that pretty quick. (Part of my learning-to-drive experience was Dad's 3/4-ton cargo van, which only had windows on the front doors... you learned to use mirrors PDQ! Knowing mirror technique I could look and check my alignment with the lane stripes...) The Interesting bit was the first time I came sailing up to a stoplight and figured out real fast just how far it took to STOP! (Half-a-truck into the intersection!) No blood, no foul, but after that I drove like Grandma for a while... :) I still drive a fully-loaded truck like a chauffeur... as smoothly as possible.

What time of year did you move, and what route? Anything you'd change? (Other than the frelling road destruction!) I could see doing the long road trip again sometime when I had some serious free time...

I moved with a U-Haul once (once) and I moved with a Penske, and it was a pretty different experience. Penske is worth the extra money (it's not even all that much extra) if you can afford it.
