Yesterday I was complaining about art. Today--life.

While I was complaining about violence against women as a norm in books, a man was shooting female nurses at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville, about 40 miles from my house.

He killed one, wounded two others, and then turned the gun on himself.

Why women in particular? No idea. If the latest developments are correct, he was angry at a surgeon who had performed an appendectomy on him nine years ago. The guy was on anti-psychotic medications, which he apparently wasn't taking. He still had no problem getting his hands on not one, but two, guns.

Excuse me, I need to go howl now.

I share your feelings all the way. Note: You and I don't know each other very well and you may not know that I am Minnesota fandom's poster child for Better Living Through Chemistry -- have been on significant antidepressants for 29 years (with one nightmare 5 1/2 month period when I tried to do without) and antipsychotics for 18 or 19. I have flatly and absolutely *no* respect for people who refuse to take their pills (having been in their number for a while) and for all my very real respect for my friends who are 2nd amendment absolutists (and I do have such friends, and they are not all hateful people) I still find myself in situations like this wondering just what is going on in this country, when stuff like this is happening. (I am hoping -- and I suspect from a cursory look at your f-list, expecting -- that there are going to be a lot of interesting comments on this post of yours. But let the first thing said be the sound of me agreeing, and howling with you in perfect unison.) (Question: Do the 2nd amendment believers out there believe that the nurses, too, should have been carrying guns, and that that would have solved everything?)

I didn't know that you were on medication--but I appreciate you talking about it a little here. I just wish the shooter had had your sensible attitude; this whole thing might not have happened.

When I was a kid I didn't like drugs--well, and I still don't, but as I have gotten older and things have happened, I have learned that sometimes you really need them and they really help.
