If you've been reading long, you can guess I'm not much for sermons.

So if I tell you there's a beautiful one here, maybe it's something special.

Only one man has ever made me seriously want to be a religious Jew. His name was Rabbi Arnold Jacob Wolf, a graduate of Hebrew Union College.

He passed away a few years ago. I wonder what he would have made of Molly's sermon. He wasn't one to throw texts aside like that -- he believed they each had something to teach us, even if it wasn't the something they looked as if they are saying -- but he believed in compassion and equality more.

The text Molly picked out is one I hold near and dear to my own happy little pagan-universalist heart. Love your neighbor as yourself. No matter, said a certain Rabbi, what that person's background is.

I applaud her, both her insightfulness and her bravery. May there be many more such brilliant, compassionate, courageous people in the world.

One thing I have always liked about Judaism is its insistance upon study and personal reflection as to what is right, not just slavish devotion to text. Choice and personal responsibility.
