You remember the Koran burning thing.

Well, I have an idea.  What if we start a backfire (metaphorically)?   Let's make September 11, 2010 "Stand Up For Religious Tolerance Day"

Everybody post something on religious tolerance.

That way we don't reward Koran burning trolls with attention, BUT we don't stay silent and let it look like we don't mind, or even agree.

If you think it's a good idea, please pass it on!

I heard a suggestion, from a caller on the Thom Hartman Program, that we should make 9/11 National Buy a Koran Day. The caller suggested that we could put far more copies of the Koran into circulation than this idiot in Florida could burn.

This is a good idea too.

A consortium of interfaith religious organizations has beaten you to the idea, but that's no reason why we can't join in! Count me in.

Sorry, long since lost track of where I read that one, and all I can find now are reports that the twit who planned the original book-burning party has backed down. I have no idea if the churches which had said they were going to use the Koran in their services this weekend are still planning to do so now that the Jones twit has declared he won't burn it after all, but I hope so. We can always use a good excuse to remember the difference between Other and Evil.

I certainly intend to go on with celebrating Stand Up For Tolerance Day. I admit that the twit prompted the discussion that gave me the idea, but the idea isn't about the twit.

No, I understand that. And I'm already thinking about what I intend to do for the occasion. The twit may have sparked the frustration which led us to take action, but the action needs taking regardless... so long as there remain any twits of any stripe who consider their religious beliefs (or lack of them; there are atheist twits too) to be justification for swinging their fist, real or metaphorical, where someone else's nose begins.

It shouldn't be "tolerance," because that's not saying the same thing as "acceptance." "Tolerance" says "I'm right and you're wrong, but you're entitled to be wrong." "Acceptance" says, "We're entitled to disagree but it's OK that you believe as you do."

Well, I am thinking about tolerance. "You're wrong, but you're entitled to be wrong, and I will keep an eye on what you have to say because you can be wrong with style and flair and sometimes your wrong ideas are still inspiring and have something valuable to teach."

I think such an attitude would still preclude being a jerk to people with different beliefs. And after all, sometimes we *do* think other people are wrong, but it would still be good not to be jerks to them.

But YMMV, and if you'd like to write a piece about standing up for religious acceptance, on, for example, how tolerance and acceptance differ and why you think acceptance is both possible and important, I'm happy to read it and reconsider my position.

Tolerance is the art of accepting what's hard for us to accept as well ass what's easy.

The way I've been thinking of it, tolerance doesn't necessarily mean accepting ideas that do harm as having a right to go uncritisized, but it does mean not blaming everyone in a group for ideas held by some people in the group.
