We've been shopping for Christmas presents the past few days. We figured if we shopped early we could get the easy stuff on everyone's wishlists and not have to go hunting for things that even Knoxville isn't bige enough to have :-). Bookstores are our favorites; we got a lot of stuff at Barnes and Noble. We were very good and didn't get anything for ourselves. Amazon is also very useful--I put in a big order over there, and was particularly charmed to discover they're also a sort of clearinghouse for used books. I haven't found a local used book store yet.

What kinds of places do you like to shop for Christmas presents? Or other presents?

stores, etc.

Favorite stores to shop at, for presents .. I suspect most of these companies have a website.

Half Price bookstore (for nonfiction book fanatics)
Sonoma Williams (cooking fanatics, and me)
Levengers (readers, editors, etc. www. levenger.com)
Brookstone (luxury travel items, etc.)
Joseph-beth bookstore (local bookstore, great journals too)
Sur La table (another great gourmet cooking store)
Crabtree & Evelyn - high quality scented lotions, bathing stuff for men and women ..

That's all I can think of right now *grin.*

Have you discovered "abebooks.com"? It's awesome! It's sort of the Amazon.com of used books. It's a central listing of used bookstores all over the world and we've used it many times to get out of print books. You'll generally pull up several listings (or several pages of listings!) and then can sort them by price, condition, edition etc.

My favourite place to go shopping for Christmas presents is in February. Its much less crowded than any of the more obvious places, like November or December.

For impractical, interesting things I like idiosyncratic shops, used bookstores like Powells, places like Saturday Market--that's where I found that glass dragonfly tile, at the booth of a guy with a Charles de Lint novel sitting in the corner. I can almost never find that kind of thing in shopping malls; most shopping-mall shops just aren't interesting in that way. Electronics and computer stuff at Fry's or by mail order. If I'm looking for some specific practical item I go to the places that I usually shop at for those kinds of things.
