Update on Pumpkin Soup
Dec. 8th, 2010 08:40 pmTonight Kip had a departmental dinner thing so I was on my own. So I tried pumpkin soup again.
This time I mixed one (regular sized) can of pumpkin and one (regular sized) can of chicken broth. Once cautious tasting had verified this combination was not going to be poured down the sink, I sliced bits of a roast chicken left over from yesterday (due to become chicken soup in a day or two.) And heated the whole thing up to boiling.
I like this better than pumpkin soup with 1% milk, definitely. Not as much as pumpkin soup with coconut milk, but that's too high in calories to be practical as a general thing, and this (pumpkin plus chicken broth) was under 200 calories for two big bowls (before adding roast chicken, natch.)
However the pumpkin makes it very thick. So it has to be stirred constantly while heating, or huge bubbles come to the surface, pop, and throw teaspoonsfull of soup on the top of the stove. It's so thick that I have to scrape it off the pot lid if I put the lid on. On the other hand, if you have to stir constantly anyway, you might as well turn the heat up to high and then it heats up pretty quickly. Don't try that trick with soup if you're not standing over it, stirring.
The last time I went to Folksingers Anonymous I was the only person who showed up. Now we were in the middle of the week before dead week and everybody was busy, but still, when nobody but you is making something a priority, chances are pretty high that thing is on its last legs. Since F.A. is a major part of my music *and* social life right now, I was bummed. I didn't talk about it here, but I was bummed for a couple of days.
Then I got word from Larry (the organizer as much as anyone is) could I join him and the others to make music for the Mossy Creek Network Solstice Party and the Carson-Newman Christmas Party? We had the first rehearsal for the Christmas Party today--fortunately we're only doing three songs, because I didn't know the chords for any of them, and one of them I'd never heard before.
We're doing "What Child Is This" (no, I didn't know the chords to "Greensleeves;" I don't know how I missed learning this but somehow it fell through the cracks. "I've Got Peace Like A River" and "A-Soaling" (basically the Peter Paul and Mary version.) If we just had time we could do a great shtick where we start with A-Soaling (which is made of pieces of other songs) then do "What Child Is This" then "Peace Like A River" then start chanting the last word of each line "River, Fountain, Ocean, Mountain, River, Fountain, Ocean, Mountain" and then burst into "A soul cake, a soul cake, please good Missus a soul cake..." (which is the chorus of "A-Soalin") to finish up.
But my companions are timid and won't be ready to do it without more rehearsals than we have time for.
For Mossy Creek Network we will want more songs. Fun songs, winter songs, but not too heavy on the Christmas songs, as Mossy Creek tries to keep things non-religious and non-sectarian. I must think on this. "Peace Like A River" would fit right in...
Hmm. I was thinking about suggesting "The Keeper" but discarded it because it wasn't a Christmas song. I wonder if the other F.A. members know it?

Date: 2010-12-09 01:27 pm (UTC)I usually stir in very hot curry paste too, but you could use pumpkin pie spices instead.
I had not thought of adding roast chicken; I'll try that.

Date: 2010-12-09 06:15 pm (UTC)1 can pumpkin mash
1/2 can chicken broth
roughly equal volume apple juice
curry or pumpkin pie spices
sprinkle of grated apple (or maybe applesauce) on top (or apple slices on the side)
That sounds interesting. I don't usually have apple juice (nothing against it, just not high in nutrients and expensive compared to water) in the house, but maybe I'll give this a try.
