Two anti-woman bills, HR 3, the bill to forbid private health insurance from covering abortion (ostensibly to prevent Federal funding of abortion except--oops---that's already prevented by the Hyde Amendment) and HR 358 the so called "Protect Life Act" which is actually the Let The Pregnant Lady Die Act are being considered by the House of Representatives this week.

If you care, contact your Representative.  You can find contact information at Vote Smart by typing in your address.  Then it really is as simple as picking up the phone.

Absolutely, fulminate about it on your blog or LJ or whatever--but your Rep isn't reading that.  Contact them and let them know how you feel.

We have several nice universities in our area, should you both care to move north.

WHAT is your country thinking??

I'd personally love to move north, but your country won't let me in.

Insufficient money, insufficient job skills, too many medical problems. Basically, they are good at taking care of their own people, but don't want to take care of immigrants any more than the US does... and I'm very obviously, even on paper, one who'd need to be taken care of.

FWIW, I had a look at the Immigration Canada page and took the quiz. *I* don't qualify to immigrate to Canada. However, they do have a point in wanting people to be self-supporting I guess. OTOH if you can find someone who wants to hire you, you go to the head of the line. I know. That's not going to work either. I'm so sorry. Maybe someday we will recognize political refugees from the US

I don't consider it unreasonable that Canada wants would-be immigrants to have a job lined up already.

I just (sigh) don't.

I would be most gratified to move to your area (though I expect the winters might take some getting used to). Certainly the company is excellent.

Alas, there's this thing called a job... Kip has one here and neither of us have one in your neck of the woods :-)

Thank you, though.

Already did. My representatives are already solid on this matter, so I feel like I don't have much clout when I call -- they're already going to vote the way I want them to -- but I can at least say thank you and let them know they have support, and did.

Thank you.

I doubt my call will make much difference either--everyone who gets elected around here is solidly "In Sorrow Shalt Thou Bring Forth Children" though they all like to put a more sanctimonious face on it.

But maybe many calls can make a difference, and our calls can be part of that many.

At least it's good for my representatives to be reminded that they have support from the electorate back home... and for yours to be reminded that not everybody in their state thinks the way they do.
