I like it. Though I must admit I find myself almost hearing a vocal harmony.

And it reminds me of a story podcast by Vi Hart: Cold Night

I wrote a harmony part but can't play it against myself reliably yet.

I'd be interested to hear yours, though, if you felt inspired to do one.

Nice, but it's recorded at a very low level, so there's lots of noise on my rather crummy soundcard.

I suggest recording 24-bit WAV files and normalizing them in Audacity before exporting mp3's. I don't know whether Garageband can handle 24-bit soundfiles, but I seem to recall that you have a Zoom recorder; it makes an incredible difference.

Okay I'll see if I can work with 24 bit files.

I tried a couple of times to set levels and kept clipping, as I recall. So I set the levels too low instead, apparently.

All part of learning how to work the recording equipment, I guess. But it's good to be learning how to work the recording equipment on scratch tracks rather than on stuff I hope to keep, so good, and thanks for letting me know. If you hear anything else I should change on further recordings, feel free to mention it.

Okay I think I have found the problem.

I was recording 24-bit files--my current incarnation of GarageBand insists on 16-bit files and converts 24-bit files to 16-bit when they are fed in.

I don't know what I'm going to do about this--I was really planning on mixing in GarageBand but it looks like that won't be good enough. I can see if the newer version of GarageBand handles 24 bit files, I suppose.

Audacity is free, cross-platform (great for collaboration), and can handle anything you want to throw at it. It's at least worth a try.

Arrr! A mighty pirate song! Or maybe a Viking song.

:-) It's a boatbuilder's song, actually. Though the Norse people definitely built boats...

Pirates, I think, tended to steal their boats.
