My Day (pre-Forum)
Oct. 14th, 2010 04:27 pmMy day began with the discovery that some members of the County Commission are YET AGAIN trying to cut funding for the School Building Project that it took the Commission 8 years to okay. We've got kids in temporary (trailer) classrooms that have been "temporary" for the last 20 years. There was an "emergency meeting" of the County Commission on this very subject two weeks ago, but the cuts were voted down in front of a very school-friendly crowd. The upcoming meeting will be at 9:00 am on a Monday. Coincidentally, at this hour most parents of school-age children will be at work and unable to attend.
Now, the County Commission, for reasons that are not clear to me, meets 8 months of the year, 4 months in the morning and 4 months in the evening. This will be the regular morning meeting. It is a happy coincidence for the would-be school-funding-cutters that most parents won't be able to come, but this is not quite the going-behind-everyone's back trick that it appears.
Nevertheless I will be going. AGAIN. I am not happy about having to drop the rest of my life to go and stand over the County Commission, but I will do it, for all the people who can't. (I feel like the mother of a toddler, actually. I spent two and a half hours standing over the last meeting--I was quite clear "NO COOKIES!" and I turn my back and here they are going for the cookies AGAIN.) I will also be making a public service announcement about the time and place and subject of the County Commission meeting at the Candidates' Forum, since the people attending that are people who are likely to be interested in the other.
Didn't do anything on the canoe today. I have the LWV Candidates Forum kind of hanging over my head so I decided to take the day off, for certain values of "taking the day off" that involve sorting and filing or recycling about twenty pounds of papers that had accumulated on and around my desk.
In the process I found a bunch of League stuff that is now all in the filing cabinet in one file, and a second bunch that is now by the back door to be taken to the Candidates' Forum. I also filed a lot of bills and bank statements and stuff. Another day like today and I'll be able to use my desk for desking-type things instead of just keeping some of my papers off the floor. However since I intend to go back to canoe-building tomorrow I'm not sure when there will be another day like today.
The diet continues apace. I am now down 10.5 pounds. Seeing the numbers on the scale creep down does help motivate me to keep going. And I feel good about the fruits and veggies and milk products I'm eating. Maybe I'll get fewer cavities too :-)
