New Song

Well, I didn't get much done on the canoe yesterday.

It's a combination of not having as many hours as usual to work on it, and a finicky, slow part of the work to do, that has to be redone, and redone, and would be much quicker if I had exactly the right tools, but I don't, and can't afford to run out and buy them, so it all has to be done by hand.

Anyway, I attended the UFO Housefilk by Skype again, and they expressed an interest in having all my songs, and two of us both said (well, typed) "All your songs are belong to us!"

And I thought "Hmm..."

Now people at the housefilk made noises about writing a song with that title, so there may be other songs out there.  This one is mine--the lyrics anyway; I'm still working on the tune.  There will probably be an mp3 presently.

ALL YouR SoNgZ ARE bELoNg 2 US!
lyrics and melody by Catherine Faber  {later edit}mp3 now available!{/later edit}

We welcome you, and we love your song
And we'll try our best to sing along.
Music lingers in this place
'Cause it can't escape from our embrace.

(chorus)
We'll preserve this song, that brought down the house
With recorder, voices, keyboard, mouse
With the subtlety of a blunderbuss
ALL YouR SoNgZ ARE bELoNg 2 US!

We must learn this song, 'cause we love it--yup!
Why it's just so cute, we could eat it up!
We'll perform this song--we'll arrange it too--
For ukelele and kazoo!

(chorus)
We'll arrange this song...

And you'll find next week, that the lyrics...bent
And no longer say what you thought they meant;
You'd stop us treating your song so rough
If you could just stop laughing long enough!

(chorus)
We'll pervert this song...

You'll find pieces scattered, west to east
Like grisly bones from a cannibal feast
As tune--or words--we cheerfully steal
And drop the rest like an orange peel.

(chorus)
We'll dismember this song...

It doesn't adhere as strictly to the scansion as is my usual wont, but I think it will still work.

I enjoyed her books very much.  I was saddened to discover this morning that she has died.

I didn't realize she wrote Dogsbody (the star Sirius comes to earth in the body of a dog)--that was one of the earliest fantasy books I read but I didn't pay attention to authors then.  I knew her mostly for the Chrestomanci books and for Howl's Moving Castle, which came along after I internalized the fact that the names on the covers sometimes predicted the quality of story inside.  Apparently, she was also an atheist, which I only discovered today.

My sympathy to her friends and family.
