I must be getting better. I still hurt and my foot still feels funny and sometimes I have shooting pains in my calf--but I keep walking off and forgetting my cane. I've had several days now when I haven't had to lie down at work. I went to my mandolin lesson today (at the right time, yay!) and didn't even *take* my cane.

My mandolin lesson today was really great, by the way. I took the mp3 recorder and "taped" it and listened to it over again on the drive home to try and help me remember what we worked on. Roy is introducing me to improvising jazz-style, and it involves diving back and forth into different modes to accomodate the chord changes--though mostly the pitches stay the same; you just think of a different note as being the starting point. Fascinating. On the way we passed through the minor pentatonic scale, how it can be expanded by playing dorian from the same starting note, and how playing either against a set of major chords influenced rock and roll. Wow. It was like glimpses of a whole undiscovered country and then the mist wraps 'round again and you know you'll have to work your way down the snowy ridges to really see that green and pleasant land. But I think it's the key to improvising with a new-to-you melody the way Callie can.

I also got paid! (chortle) It has been six weeks since I started, so it was a bigger paycheck than I'll normally get. I've felt rich ever since. I keep having the impulse to go buy this or that thing that I've wanted; more CoolMax long underwear (the kind the wicks the sweat away from your skin--it really does work better), or another mesh bag for putting delicate things (like high-tech long underwear) in the laundry. I found myself *suggesting* to Kip that we get chicken nuggets from McDonalds for dinner. I'm completely out of control. ;-)

(Callie here) - I want to affirm that yes, what Roy is teaching you *IS* the key (no pun intended) to the kind of improvisation that I do. And I'm delighted that he's teaching it, and that you're "catching glimpses". Perhaps the glimpses you're catching, combined with having observed me do similar things over time, will all "gel" for you. I hope so, anyway!

And congrats on getting paid (at last, wow, that's a long delay!). Great to hear that things are improving, in so many ways.

*hugs*
Callie

Cool! I think I'm going to like it. I'm still trying to get a handle on it, but with the lesson to listen to, I think I have a chance.

Yes, it was six weeks after I started before I got paid. But payday is monthly, so they only had two weeks to make the first one and I guess a lot of people were on vacation, it being near Christmas and all.

Really glad to hear that the back is getting better! That's great.

Have been listening to "Hazel Tree" quite a bit lately and will say again that it turned out very well; it's a great album.

Thanks! I'm hoping it will get all the way better soon.

I'm glad you're enjoying Hazel Tree. You should tell Callie, too; she worked very hard making the whole thing come together.

I hope I've conveyed that to Callie...we talk all the time. She certainly did bust her butt getting that album done, and she deserves to be proud of the result.

:-) Yes, she does. I was impressed by Blindsight, BTW; I've been playing it on my walks. You did some really quality production work there, and Callie laid down some nice flute tracks.

Thanks very much; that means a lot to me. It's my first time out as a producer and so I really wanted it not to sound amateurish. I'm glad you like it.

I think the production is very professional---but I really like it best for the songs :-)

Well, it's not like Jefferson City has a wide range of takeout food available. And I like chicken nuggets.

I'm glad to be doing better, though I'll be even gladder to be actually all the way better.
