Today I recognized the song of the Eastern Meadowlark while I was taking my walk. I'm adding it to my list of birds recognized by their songs or calls:

Blue Jay
Cardinal (though I still have trouble telling it from the Tufted Titmouse)
Red-winged Blackbird
Robin
Belted Kingfisher
Eastern Meadowlark

I thought I'd be quicker about learning the songs on the Birding by Ear CD, but I keep finding myself hearing songs and thinking--"I know that; I've heard that--but which one was it?"

Missed a lot of work last week, 2 days sick and 2 doctor's appointments (unrelated). The back specialist thinks I may just have arthritis rather than a herniated disc. Arthritis is more permanent, but on the other hand I wouldn't have to worry that I was going to cripple myself with an incautious move. I need to get him the X-rays that Dr Belt-and-suspenders :-) ordered back in January. And make an appointment for physical therapy. And there was something else I had to do tomorrow morning... I wonder what it was?

The Cardinal has an amazing variety of songs. You have to learn to recognize him by his tone quality, because you can't learn all the songs. I frequently hear an odd birdsong, only to realize after a moment that it's a cardinal.

You did leave behind a lot of wonderful stuff when you left Oregon, but at least now you have cardinals.

:-) The first time I saw a cardinal (near Amarillo, TX) you would have thought I was watching a Narwhal or a Duck Billed Platypus or something. I'd seen pictures, of course, but never till that time (I think I was 26 or so) seen a real, live cardinal.

I can't recognize all the cardinal's songs, but the classic "Cheer, cheer, wheet-wheet-wheet-wheet" I can pick out.

There's a lot of wonderful stuff in Oregon, but Tenessee has a lot of great stuff too. Though for some reason the violets in Oregon seem to have more scent than the violets in Tennessee. Go figure.
