Time Sink

Facebook has been sucking me into a huge time-sink again.  I need to either cut my stream down to where I can read a day's worth in 30 or 40 minutes, or convince myself it's okay to stop before I've read it all.

In other news I've been doing a lot of song-entry.  There were a handful of songs that didn't have sheet music on my songbook web site and I would like to fix that, for the sake of completeness.  So I've been trying to enter a couple of songs a day.  Finale PrintMusic gets easier to use the more you use it, I notice.  Though part of that is just getting more used to typing musical notes by their letter notes on the keyboard.  On the other hand actually composing in it doesn't seem to work very well for me.  Stuff that seemed fine when played back by the program sounds wrong when I try to play it on the mandolin.  I guess for me PrintMusic is for entering stuff I've already composed.  Different brains think differently.

The weather is cooling, which is always a relief in Tennessee.  It's early, though; as if we got September in August.  I mean to get out there and canoe a few times, though I'm a little anxious about it, since my wrenched knee seems to have quit getting better.  Walking into the muddy, rocky lake while carrying a canoe is the sort of thing where it's easy to put a foot wrong.  Yesterday I started doing my old knee exercises from physical therapy back when I tore the cartilage in my other knee, and I'll work up gradually to the full set and see if that helps.

I go to the UU church in Knoxville, and recently started talking to the music director there, Vicki, about my songwriting.  I collected eight or so of my recent songs that I thought she would like and sent her lyrics and sheet music that she requested for a proposed summer choir project.  I never heard anything back and thought she had changed her mind but when I went to church again a couple of weeks ago she asked why I never sent her anything.  I guess my e-mail didn't go through; I didn't get a bounce message, but you don't, always.  So I sent the stuff again, and then a couple of weeks later I mentioned I had an album out and asked about the church's Open Mic Night (now on my calendar for October 19th) ...

[later edit because my iPad starts behaving very oddly when I try to enter too much text]

Also Vicki told me she'd like to have me give a concert at the church, which would be great.  This is one of the few places locally where I could sing Atheist's Anthem and It's Okay To Be Takei and Axial Tilt and Happy Holidays and not have to worry that people will be offended.  Also she said "bring lots of albums and t-shirts when you come."  I certainly wouldn't mind if people wanted to buy the album, so great!  She said she had to meet with Chris (the minister) and would get back in touch with me after that, so we'll see, but I'm hopeful.

Oh, that's cool about the church. I'm sorry about your knee, though. Knees are so crucial! I hope the exercises do help.

Interesting about composing vs. transcribing in the program. It makes sense that some people would not find the former works for them.

Cool about church -- have fun!

As for facebook, I like having a large set of friends (and hate to turn anybody down when they ask), so I settled for making a list called "close friends". Facebook notifies me if any of *them* post, and it's a small enough set so that I can get through it.

For my full feed I just read until I get bored, run out of time, or come to some other stopping point.
