Some Observations, Part Two
Sep. 20th, 2013 06:38 pmNow that I've laid out these arguments, and people have had a chance to consider them I will just point out that the actual post that prompted these thoughts on my part occurred earlier this summer, and was a touching and heartfelt plea for better treatment of a different popular and powerful majority.
I would just like to point out that every point of my argument about better treatment for straights--who is the majority, by how much, how the majority owns society and government, and that the majority has a pattern of mistreating the minority that goes back for centuries and continues, if slightly abated, to this day--applies equally well to the popular and powerful majority the writer wanted better treatment for: religious people.*
And my point that demanding better treatment for the group that is *already* getting better treatment contributes to oppression, whether or not it was intended that way? Yeah, that applies too.
-----------------------------------------------------
* To be fair, in the case in question this worked out to be demanding better treatment for straights in any case.

Date: 2013-09-21 09:48 pm (UTC)It later became clear from context that the problem was that she had tweeted that gays shouldn't "appropriate" the term "marriage" and had suffered some resulting social backlash that her religion was not getting her out of in the usual way. For whatever reason she interpreted this as "being rejected because of her religion" and a few other people boosted the signal and took this opportunity to harangue non-religious people for "kicking dogs for no reason" so to speak.
FWIW if I had to guess I'd guess Christian.
