We had a lovely Christmas. Jacob found my calendar, which I'd been stressed out over mislaying, in his car while loading presents to bring to Dad's house, so the first thing he did on coming in the door was to hand it to me. This meant I wouldn' t have to spend the day after Christmas calling or visiting every place I'd been on the 23rd and 24th, which was a nice Christmas present all on its own.

We took turns unwrapping presents and reading poems (there weren't as many present-poems as usual because Mom had been a major driver of that custom, but I wrote a poem for at least one gift for everybody, and Jake and Dad wrote some poems too). It was a bit odd not having Mom there, but not as blighting as I'd feared it might be. I got two more books on knitting socks--my next project is a toe-up sock (perhaps with a gussetted heel--I'll decide when I get that far) with some lovely blue/turquoise/magenta/grey yarn that Callie gave me. She loaned me some bamboo needles too, which are supposed to be nicer than regular needles, but I must knit too tight, or something--I can't get the loops to slide over them properly. So I went back to my aluminum needles.

I also got a Palm Pilot (chortle). Now I just have to figure out how to get it to synch with my Mac. But it promises to be very cool.

Trying to catch up on my sleep, I went to bed at 9:00pm last night. And woke up at 5:30 and couldn't sleep. Perhaps I'll try going back to bed now.

sleep is a good thing. I've not seen my casio palm since Orycon -- hoping it came home with us... so I'm glad you found your calendar!

yeah on toe up -- I pointed [info]hsifyppah at one pattern on the web and she's not looked back. I do cuff down with a double thickness (k1,s1 -- p back) for the heel and then turn and pick up for instep. Got to the point where I just knit and make up the pattern as I go along -- dependent on size.

I found a 98% cotton 1.8% elastic yarn that is good for people with wool allergies. Cascade Yarns' Fixation http://www.onefineyarn.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=YARN_B3

the verigated colour knits into strips not blobs btw.

enjoy the yarn from [livejournal.com profile] cflute it sounds lovely and she has such good sources for yarn in her area. Wish I had million$$ and a transporter I'd shop til I dropped.... yarn and dulcimers (giggle)

Hope to see you somewhere soon. I'd love to show you my collection of dulcimers, I'm doing a lot of EC on them now.

btw -- the fixation makes one sock and a bit per ball. Depending on size -- I made woman's size 12 with short leg and 4.5" cuff and still had enough left over to get the next cuff and part of heel done. (if you do it this way the stripes don't match)

Amanda is a really beautiful dulicmer. It would be great to hear her.

One of my Christmas books has a pattern for a toe up sock with a heel flap and gusset that I'm trying with the varegated yarn that Callie gave me. I only brought size 2 needles--I really should have brought some size 1 or size 0.

Thanks for pointing me towards that yarn page--I'll check it out.

ah --- that size 2

I was thinking 2 mm... I knitted Callie's socks with 2.25 mm which is I think about an American 0

The fixation I'm knitting with 3.25 mm needles.

Let me know what you think of the toe up pattern you got. I may beg and wheedle.

+ Happy New Year

Present-poems! That sounds like a neat tradition. Do the poems go inside the wrapping, or outside like tags? Are they always about the present inside, or are they about anything?

Merry Christmas! :)

the poems go on the outside of the present--usually we write or print the poem on one side of the paper and the recepient's name on the other side, like a gift tag. Sometimes they're specifically about the present, sometimes they refer to the present in some way but aren't specifically about it, sometimes they are about the recipient, or about Christmas or winter in general.

Unrelated--
