Sep. 9th, 2003 10:47 pmWell, today was not very exciting. Yesterday I got the bookshelves in my office wedged into place, counteracting the gentle inward slope of the floor. So it's safe to put books on the shelves. Shelving books is grunt work, and I did a lot of grunting and I'm only about a third done and sore all over, and the books aren't even sorted. But at least they're out of boxes. That was today's big project.
Today's little project was laundry and I'm finally all caught up.
And today's fun project was originally going to be making a bag for holding canoing gear. Now, it is my solemn belief that it is not possible to keep the inside of a canoe dry while canoing. I always get my feet wet pushing off, and some of that water always ends up in the boat. Then there's the issue of rain, which can, over an hour or two, generate a startling amount of bilge water, and the fact that if you ever lay your paddle in the canoe, or even swing it across the canoe to change sides, it drips. Canoing is a damp activity and I'm okay with that. But this means I wanted a bag made of fabric that wouldn't sop up much water, and wouldn't trap water inside. I figured a mesh, like the stuff they make bags for laundering delicates in, would do the job.
I had all kinds of plans about shoulder straps and ways to strap a life jacket around the outside (to make it easier to put stuff in the car--I always wear my life jacket in the boat), and maybe there should be pockets, or the bag could have two compartments... but it turns out that local fabric stores don't carry that kind of mesh. In desperation I went to the laundry-related section of the local Wal-Mart and there found a giant laundry bag that will probably do the trick. Two, actually. I'm still thinking about adding straps and pockets, but at least this will keep my gear from rolling around in the boat, and make it easy to keep all my canoing gear in one place at home so I can just grab it and go.
Maybe even tomorrow morning. :-)
