So there's this theory I can put pictures up. I'm gonna try. People have been asking for pictures of Patience; this is the best one I have so far, taken yesterday.

I'm pretty much free these days--just let me know when you're available to go canoeing. You can borrow one of my (other) canoes if you want--but I only have one set of pads and ropes right now. I'm hoping to get my hands on a rack soon, and at that point I expect to be able to 1) haul more than one solo canoe 2) loan pads and ropes to carry a canoe on a second car.

Use the "static.flickr.com" URL to get direct displays, e.g., <img src="http://static.flickr.com/57/186012618_3d99e09ddc.jpg">. This is what ohiblather uses on the flickr pictures she displays directly on lj. You can pick up the URL (using Internet Exploder, anyway) by right-clicking on the picture in the flickr album, and then selecting the properties item from the pop-up menu.

Goodness yes. The collateral damage would be considerable. How fortunate that nothing...unfortunate...is going to happen. To anyone.

That fiberglass should keep anything from happening to it. I was thinking about having rented aluminum canoes as a kid (and getting drenched a couple of times in the Au Sable and Pere Marquett rivers in northern Lower Michigan). I can't imagine a wood canoe of simiar weight putting up with that kind of abuse. How thick is the hull?

The wood strips were 1/4 inch thick before being planed and sanded, but of course the epoxy-fiberglass adds thickness... I'd guess the hull's about 3/8 inch, but I'm not sure. This type of canoe is supposed to be reasonably tough, but probably not as tough as aluminum :-)

If you and Patience are in a traveling mood sometime, there is a canoe-able birdwatching trail marked in one of the wildlife refuges over by Brinkley. I forget the exact name of the refuge but the trail-markers feature the silhouette of an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.

Brinkley is around 70 miles east of Little Rock.
They've even got a motel there (a former Super8) called the Ivory Bill Inn.

I'm glad you like the canoe. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Err... Safety stuff? You mean besides the life jacket I am wearing in the picture, the two spare paddles whose handles can be seen in the picture, and the front painter that doubles as a throw rope which is partly visible in the picture? There's also a back painter (which I don't think is visible in the picture), but it's only 10 feet long; nowadays on flat water I usually tie it to me, so that if I go overboard Patience won't leave without me. I don't think I'd adopted that trick at the time the picture was taken.

Am I missing some safety stuff?
