It turns out that one of the hostels we'll be staying at, the Avalon House, offers a free night's stay for performers who are willing to do a concert. I e-mailed Avalon House asking if they'd be interested in a concert of my filk songs, and they said they'd be delighted. So, cool. I printed out the songbook I recently made, plus a few of my old songs, and will be taking them with me to Ireland, and will be performing sometime from 27 May to 30 May, at the Avalon House in Dublin.

I can't take an instrument, but Avalon House says they have some guitars. A mando would be tops, but I can work with a guitar.

I don't suppose anybody on my friends list will be in the area, but just in case :-)

Busk in one of the walking mall areas for me! Or at least pretend you did. ;-) Stop by Quinsworth, walk the streets late at night, and - ooh, here's an *actual* one - go to the Barn Owl and see if there's a session. If there is, ask if there's a Frank who plays there still. I'm not sure if I ever told him that he saved me from being robbed and possibly injured that night he drove me home from the session.

See, after he got me back to the hostel, we sat in the car talking for a few minutes. While there, I noticed two guys coming out of the hostel at great velocity, shrugged, kept talking. A few minutes later, I went in and was met with, "Did you see them?" "See who?" "The guys who robbed the hostel." "What??"

Turns out two guys had come in, one holding a hammer and one a syringe. They said the syringe was infected with AIDS, and for everyone to give them all their cash. I missed walking in on this scene - and probably freaking the guys into doing Something Bad - only because I stayed and talked a few minutes with Frank.

He's probably about 60-65 years old by now. I'm guessing he was 50-55 when I knew him. If I recall correctly, he plays flute.

If I meet him, I will tell him you say hi. It's copied down in my journal.

Oh, Cat! If you are in Dublin on a Friday night, try, try, try to go to the Singer's Club. You will have such a good time, and they will love you. It's on the top floor of Tom Maye's Pub at the Junction of North Frederick Street and Upper Dorset Street. Look for the door that leads to the Ladies Room and follow the stairs up. It's all about the voice in that room, no instruments. Niamh Parsons and her sister are regulars there.

It sounds lovely. Unfortunately it looks like my stay in Dublin won't include a Friday night.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I went there, but I haven't been able to find the note about where I was that night.

Dang! I wish my Songbird had known about this before the trip to Ireland she just finished last week; I'm sure she could have convinced the Avalon House folks to let her sing for her lodging. Neither of us can be there for your show, sadly, but do let us all know how it goes. And have some fun up there on the auld sod while yer at it!

Oh, I absolutely do expect to have fun. And I'll post about the Ireland trip when I get home.

What's the date you'll be playing in Dublin? It's a pretty cheap trip from London, m'dear.... :-)

Well, we haven't arranged a specific date yet--the e-mail from Avalon house said to talk to them about it when I get there. I'm going to try for the evening of the 30th, since that will give me the most time to practice with their guitar, since I can't bring any instrument of my own. But that depends on whether some other performer(s) have already booked that date, etc. Sorry I can't be more specific.

The phone number of the Avalon House is 353-1-4750001 (drop the 353-1 and add a 0 on the front if calling within Ireland; I have no idea which configuration works from England, but I bet you do), and their e-mail is info at avalon-house dot ie if you want to check with them; I'll arrive there the 27th. Or if you send me your phone # I'll try to call you when I know. cat at hwaet dot org.

I don't know if I'll have any internet access for the duration of the trip, or I'd offer to update my lj with the information :-)

I would be thrilled to see you there :-). For that matter, if you're interested in getting together (I'll be in Killarney (3 nights; May 17-19), Dingle (one night), Galway (2 nights) Sligo (2 nights) Newgrange (2 nights) and Dublin (4 nights May 27-30) and I would be happy to get together just about anytime. I'm guessing Dublin would be easiest for you to get to. But get back to me soon on this if you can, as I'll be gone by 2 hours after this time tomorrow :-S
