I've had family over for the last week or so, so I have been having a lot of fun, but I haven't been reading livejournal. If there's something I should know, let me know :-)

My brother Jake flew in (commercial) from Oregon and we spent three days playing D&D like mad things, then my dad flew in (in the plane he built) from Oregon and we went hiking and to the movies and ate out a lot and celebrated Jakes birthday and Kip's and my half-birthdays, since we're frequently not with my family when our birthdays come up, then dad saw a window of good weather and flew out again after only two and a half days, and Kip and Jake and I gamed like mad things for another two and a half days before Jake had to catch his flight home.

Whew. I went to bed early last night. Well, early compared to when I *had* been going to bed, anyway. But my pants are bankrupt, the laundry and the dishes have piled up, and I have a bunch of things I promised to do that I need to hurry up and do. So I may be kind of quiet for a while.

Mon Dieu, I was amazed and impressed that you built a canoe. Your dad actually built a plane! Even more amazing!

Mom and Dad built two planes, actually. A KitFox and an RV-9. Dad mostly uses the RV-9; I'm not entirely sure the KitFox is flyable right now (though they did fly it for years).

What kind of plane? (says the guy who's wanted for years to do something like that, but probably won't anytime soon but still thinks they're waaaaaay cooler than anything that ever saw the innards of a factory...)

(The icon is a Cozy, designed by Nat Puffer, a stretched version of the original VariEZ/LongEZ design by Burt Rutan now of spacefaring fame.)

A KitFox and an RV-9, nothing so exotic as the Cozy. Mom and Dad built them together, though I suspect Dad did slightly more on them. Dad mostly uses the RV-9; I'm not entirely sure the KitFox is flyable right now (though they did fly it for years).

To be fair, the kits are made in a factory.

Hey, an RV-9 is nothing to sneeze at. Yes, it's "conventional" construction, but it's still lighter, tougher, and a heck of a lot faster than anything out of Wichita or Vero Beach... if I was to build, and not build a Cozy, it would definitely be the RV-9's bigger brother, the RV-10... the bubble canopy thing is just too cool, too. :)

You can get something strongly resembling a Cozy in kit form, now, too; I think it's called an Aerocanard...

Hey, it's a good reason to be away. Me, these days I scarcely have time to write, but usually manage to get some photos up. (BTW, if you find time, please look over the photos of Archon filkers--I don't know half of these people, and I'd like to add some names.)

Thanks--got those names. Sigh. World is chaotic--I didn't have any time to do serious clean-up on those photos.
