I went to the housefilk at quadrivium's place on Saturday, stayed overnight (it's a 4 1/2 hour drive for me) and hung around in the morning until I realized what time it was, and that I'd told my husband I'd be back about the time I was leaving, and headed out.

It was great fun--I don't know why I've been talking myself out of going to these things.  It's not *that* long a drive.  I listened to "Courting My Muse," quadrivium's new CD on the way down, and it turned out it had a copy of "Bad Man Go Good" on it, which I'd been meaning to write an answer to since I heard it years ago.  Inspired by this, I wrote several chunks of the song while driving down Hwy 72--using the back side of my printout of the directions, since it was the only paper I had handy.

I arrived way early, because I'd had nothing else to do that day, and quadrivium said it would be okay, so I was there for much of the Birds of a Feather (quadrivium and weirdsister) rehearsal.  They have some really beautiful material and their voices blend wonderfully--I envy the mundanes they were going to perform for Sunday afternoon.   While I was listening, I wrote some more portions of the song I'd started on the way down.

I'd guess about a dozen people came to the evening circle--enough that the living room was cozy, but not so many we couldn't all fit.  I'm not going to be able to remember everyone there, because my memory lives on a positive logic chip with an intermittent short between two of its outputs, but I remember autographed cat and kitzani (who were very surprised to see me) and thatcrazycajun and Mike L (who may have an jl handle but I don't know it) and a handsome blond guy named Brian, and of course quadrivium and her husband Wes (he turns out to be a chef--who knew?  The food at this shindig--but I don't want to be responsible for shorted keyboards from all the drool, so never mind.  But there was much excellent real food, which was great for people like me who get a little squirrely on too much snacks--not that there was any shortage of snacks but I chose wisely).  There was weirdsister and kiltedwitch and a falconer whose name I'm losing (but no falcon--I suppose it's not practical in so tight a space, and anyway it's not filk related, but how cool!) and some more  filkers I hadn't met yet--Erica? Enrika? something like that, and Mike (I think), and a fellow named Adam who had written a bunch of rocking kids songs (One that went "When I grow up I want to be a dinosaur" and another about the "Three Bean Casserole War.")  And quadrivium has written a lot of new stuff since I saw her last, and it really rocks.

I may have found a home for Feather--I'll see if it works out.  I've been thinking that I really should turn her over to someone else--I've switched to mandolin and octave mando, and poor Feather just sits in the corner and I'd really like to see her go to someone who could use her.

The mimmoths had a wonderful time, and were good.  I'm not sure what's up with that--I hope there's not something I'm missing.

And toward the end of the evening, Mary kindly performed "Bad Man Go Good" so I could do the answering song.  There was much laughter and blushing.  Here are the lyrics as I performed them then--I will probably rearrange them a bit, because I'm still getting ideas.  For now, I'll call it

Why, Hello, Honey...
lyrics by Catherine Faber
melody by Mary Crowell

I quickly got bored with the man that you mention;
You're right--he's a moron, who over-caroused.
But now that I've finally got your attention,
You've got my interest thoroughly roused.
He's tediously peaked and gaunt.
Take him, if he's still what you want.
I'm sure you can, with just a greeting,
Stop your captain's heart from beating
But I warn you, sunlit sister, I am harder to daunt!
It's always so cute to watch honor try guile,
But fortune can fashion a queen from a pawn,
You know, I have always admired your style.
Night kisses day in the sweet blush of dawn...
I won't undertake you, unless---
You mean it, the hour you say yes.
I enjoy the odd occasion
To engage in sweet persuasion
But I warn you, sunlit sister, I won't settle for less!
I'll go where you want, I'm okay with a tower
If you don't like my sleeves you can rip them away.
I'll be your prisoner, trapped in your power--
That would make you my natural prey!

It was utterly lovely to see you. I hope you'll make a habit of it. :)
