Sep. 26th, 2003 08:35 amYesterday was the farewell potluck for Music In The Park. There was so much food it completely covered two picnic tables and I had a hard time finding a spot to put my grapes.
I brought my mandolin and my new tuner worked pretty well in spite of the fact that an electric guitar and bass were booming at my back as I tried to tune. I got some more practice at playing along with songs I barely knew or didn't know at all, and even used the closed scale I learned the day before to play along with one maniac who was playing in B. Ha! Plus I figured out the scale for E pretty much on the fly. Double ha! A couple of different people asked me how long I'd been playing--I'm not sure if they were thinking "boy she's good" or "boy, she's terrible." I didn't quite have the nerve to ask. But all in all, things went pretty well--I even got nudged toward the microphone a couple of times.
It's a strange sensation to play with electric instruments. Normally I work toward a delicate touch with the mandolin so as not to overpower the singer (who is frequently me), but at these jams I often find myself playing as hard as I can and still barely able to hear if I'm on the right note or not.
When I came home we gave the hermit crabs a bath--which means we dunked them in a bowl of lukewarm distilled water for a minute each. I'm not sure if they liked it or hated it, but they were much more active afterward, which led to us playing with them for a while. Mostly we just set them down on the table and let them run around and kept them from flinging themselves over the edge. Now and then they would run up onto our hands.
