Is anyone else playing Eve Online?

I'm playing in Gallente space, and would love to join up with some people I know now and then.  Playing in a fleet or a gang is a lot of fun.

Oh, also I wrote a new song.  About Eve Online :-)  For those not in the know, characters in Eve are called "capsuleers," I think because of the life support pod you wind up in if your ship is destroyed.

The Joy Of The Capsuleer
by Felicity Daubigny
(TTO Rolling Down To Old Maui)

In joy I've sailed through the dust that veiled, in a dance of silver and dun,
To gaze alone on a world unknown, by the light of a distant sun.
All I ask is an honest task and a star by which to steer--
For the fire and grace of boundless space is the joy of the capsuleer!

Where the miner's kiss is a groaning hiss on the asteroids below,
When my cache of ore could hold no more, I would somersault and go
Space is vast and the past is past, and the way before me clear--
For the fire and grace of boundless space is the joy of the capsuleer!

I have drawn the line where the ore was mine, when the damn Serpentis came.
Where judgement's line cut a bit too fine, I have fled with my tail aflame. . .
But battle bold is a tale best told with a burger and a beer,
And the fire and grace of boundless space is the joy of the capsuleer!

I have made, what's more, from the very ore, half the ships that I have flown,
And I mean for fun, when my race is run, to invent and build my own.
For the hull design that is truly mine will cap my whole career--
And the fire and grace of boundless space is the joy of the capsuleer!

Apparently the idea is that you spend the whole time in the pod, with your brain hooked up to the computer, which may explain why so many of the avatars look as though they've been too long in the bath. Personally I had no time for that conceit, and always regarded myself as piloting the ship in the traditional manner from a comfortable chair.

I'm in the process of disengaging from EVE, for a number of reasons, some financial, some to do with the way in which you can work for months to afford a really good ship and have it blown out from under you by another player or a bunch of NPCs in five seconds. I prefer games that are fairer than real life. However, I'm subscribed through the end of the year, so if you're around the Masalle/Dodixie area and you happen to run into Maleus Garamite, say hi.

Hmm. I haven't been playing very long, so maybe I missed the "brain hooked up to the computer" part. I also pictured my character in a pilot's seat. Plus I know you can change from ship to ship with relatively little fuss, which I wouldn't expect if you had to unhook and move a brain.

I will add Maleus Garamite to my address book, and say hi if I see you :-). I'm Felicity Daubigny, in Gallente space, (mostly hanging around Clellinon and Cistuvaert, where I started, but I've only been playing for 10 days or so.

I haven't tried Eve Online yet. I'm back into World of Warcraft again for the third time and am enjoying playing with my friends there again. We play on Andorhal and our guild name is "Robber Barons".

I'm glad you're having a good time :-) I think I'll stick with Eve; I couldn't possibly take on another game at this point.

Haven't tried Eve Online yet. Just got into Lord of the Rings Online (playing a human hunter named "Lern" on the Elendilmir server) and every now and then I pop up as "Mrgoodwraith" on RuneScape. Otherwise, I have a character named "Glom Kilgoolie" on Pirates of the Caribbean Online, a Valkyrie named "Jaatra" on croNous, and other characters whose names I don't recall offhand on Hero Online, Scions of Fate, and Eudemons Online, but I don't foresee playing those much (or at all) in the future unless some other interesting folks (like you) show up. I used to play a couple of interesting characters on Dofus, but my subscription has been lapsed for a long time and I doubt they exist any more. I had a terrific character named Beigebeard in the Puzzle Pirates beta -- he was captain of a large crew, in fact -- but I lost him during the official launch and I haven't played since. These days I only really have time for one or at most two casual MMORPGs, total playing time about five to seven hours a week.

It sounds like you have enough games to keep you busy, alright :-) I had no idea there were so many.

See the Wikipedia list of free MMOGs or the list of free MMORPGs at GameOgre. I forgot about Deicide; I played that for a while too, but it was just too dark visually and the grind factor was too punishing; you had to kill massive numbers of tough monsters to level, and if you slipped up and got killed, it could take days to recover to where you had been. Not recommended.
