Remember when I commented on the times when Barak Obama was manly enough, strong enough, civil enough, to say McCain was right, during the debates? And how McCain never reciprocated?

It has come to my attention that the McCain campaign is now pointing to these moments of civility, of basic decency, and holding them up to public scorn as evidence that Barak Obama is weak.

If--and I say "if," because it is by no means a foregone conclusion--the McCain campaign succeeds, by mocking his decent, civil behavior, in making it a matter of political survival for Obama to become as uncivil as McCain,

Then when I complain about McCain's incivility I will take it extremely badly if someone has the nerve to suggest in my presence that Obama is just as bad.

Just sayin'

What you said.

But take heart. I've read a few comments about the ad McCain just put out with Obama saying he's right, and it's apparently so bad it's counterproductive.

One blogger pointed out that it isn't exactly in McCain's best interest to claim that somebody who holds the same opinions and makes the same proposals he does isn't qualified to lead the country. ::grin::

They're the Campaign That Couldn't Shoot Straight.

Thanks. That makes me feel somewhat better.

It's pretty maddening, isn't it?

Yeah, it is. I need to quit reading the news anytime before bed :-)

Oh, it stopped being funny long ago.

If Obama stays civil and loses to McCain/Scudder Palin as a result, I will take it even more badly.

Oh, in the long run I'd definitely rather see Obama win than remain civil. It just infuriates me that anyone would try to present civility as being an act of weakness.

BTDT on Usenet. There are depressingly many people who believe that victory in a debate consists of outshouting your opponent. On the other hand, so far Obama has a bounce in the polls of independent voters.

Good news about the bounce. I'm not sure what BTDT means?

BTDT = Been there; done that.

You would think so, wouldn't you? But I'd never seen that acronym before.

The secret of debating (which so many folks fail to understand) is that you are not playing against the other debater; you are playing to the peanut gallery.

In these debates ... neither McCain nor Obama hopes to convert their opponents core followers. All they can hope to do is to make the undecided voters lean their way.

And this analysis says Obama won that fight by a mile.

thanks for posting the link.

I understand, about the peanut gallery. And I know it makes a big difference whether people are watching TV or listening to the radio. I didn't hear the same debate that most viewers saw, in effect. Part of what I was worried about was that Obama might have come off a lot worse visually than he did on the radio, where I thought he held his own, but didn't win by as much of a margin as I would have liked.

I'm hearing that he did very well among TV viewers, though. But I also know there are a few days for parties to "spin" how their candidate did--and the Republicans are very very good at spin.

The media aren't on their side any more, though--I think Palin finally scared even the media in-groupers. Whether this will be enough to turn the election is harder to say. Businesses are going to start folding because there is no longer enough money for short-term loans and people are already losing their houses. It doesn't look like either problem is going to be fixed before the election; I expect this will translate into some real panic, and who knows what the voters will do?

I think Congress will probably do something to loosen up the commercial paper (short term credit) market before the election, because a freeze up in that would mean that companies can't pay everyday bills like payroll. Don't know what it will be or how it will work, but I think they're beginning to feel the urgency.

It's not clear to me what they can do, if they're not willing to go for some sort of bailout plan. There's plenty as believe that letting businesses go down because of problems in commercial paper is the right thing to do.

So you're saying we have a civil war on our hands? :-)

But seriously, I think you're reading way too much into this. Obama is a polite fellow, raised by some nice people from Kansas who taught him to keep a civil tongue in his head and to respect his elders. McCain is the third generation of hard-fighting, hard-drinking, hard-cussing Navy officers who was raised to take no crap from anyone. And he's the elder. I'm seing more civility from McCain than I expected, knowing his background, and more from Obama, knowing how infuriating McCain can be.

BTW, I'm adding you to my FL, since a lot of my political posts are locked. Come by any time to give me another point of view.
