The Economist had economists rate Obama and McCain on how well they would handle the economy. The results are here.

In other news, Sarah Palin accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists" because Obama once served on a charity board with Bill Ayers, who was a member of the Weather Underground, despite the fact that (emphasis mine)
The White House hopeful, who was a child when Weather Underground was active, has denounced Mr Ayers' radical past.
And the New York Times has an article about Fannie and Freddie Mac and the mortgage mess here. Democrats do seem to have been heavily involved, though the Republican administration helped. Err... "helped."

Andrew Sullivan, whom I had thought conservative, has a poor opinion of Palin's performance in the VP debate, and what it means for women. He also has an opinion on the attempt to shut down the investigation of Troopergate. I've got to say, along those lines, that I'm put off enough by the Bush administration's blatant and repeated attempts to restrict the information that would make it possible to determine if they were breaking the law or not--the sort of information that other administrations (since Nixon's) have published without question. Under the circumstances, to see the McCain campaign treading in the Bush administration's footsteps in this would be deeply disturbing to me even if I otherwise favored McCain.

Palin should be careful about what stones she throws, being herself married to a terrorist.

Todd Palin was a member of the Alaska Secessionist movement, which has in fact advocated violence and stockpiled weapons. In fact, he was a registered Alaskan Independence Party voter as recently as 2002, after which time he may have decided it would be better for their careers if he became just a Republican. But I guess that's okay if you're white and fiercely independent and mavericky and shoot hunting trophies from a helicopter and stuff. Darn tootin'!

Doggone it, say it ain't so, Joe! There you go again, pointing fingers at the past because when Putin rears his ugly head it's Alaskan airspace that means the ask at a soccer game the American people what a middle class hockey mom with lipstick about mavericks like me!

Sullivan's pov defies ready categorization. He is generally conservative on economic issues. He is socially conservative on many issues, except for gay rights, of which he is an avid advocate.

He has been an Obama supporter since fairly early in the primary process.

I checked in on Sullivan a lot a year or two ago, but hadn't read his blog much since then. To the extent that I had an expectation, I expected his social conservatism to push him toward McCain but obviously I misjudged.

“The minimum rating of one severely overestimates the quality of Bush’s economic policies,” says one non-aligned economist.

*falls over, laughing*

OMG, that's good.

Your link to the NYT's mortgage article actually goes to the BBC piece on Palin again. (Am I the first person to notice this?)
