I went for a walk yesterday. This was a Good Thing, since I haven't been getting much exercise since my back started kicking up. Exercise will probably help it get better--I just have a hard time remembering that when I hurt and my first impulse is to lie down until it goes away.

New Market has curtsied to autumn and the first bars of the music are beginning to play, but the dance hasn't started yet. The air is cool and the leaves are starting to look a little withered, and some of them are even falling, but the colors are still mostly green with the occasional accent of red or gold. Some bird, or insect, was singing in the hedgerows, sounding very like the chime of a harness bell; is it new, or did I just not notice it before? I surprised something in the bushes beside the road. It scrambled and lurched away without breaking cover. The marmalade cat sleeping by someone's front walk didn't even crack a drowsy eye as I passed. A red bird (cardinal? scarlet tanager? too quick to be sure) shot across my bow and disappeared into the vine shrouded woods behind a neighbor's house.

At my back door a blue jay demonstrated it could fly straight up.

I should have felt cheered up.

I do feel some better this morning, though and my back doesn't hurt as much.
