Copy this sentence into your livejournal if you're in a non-same-sex marriage, and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really just don't get how people can think that their marriages could possibly be hurt by a couple (or many couples) of strangers marrying each other somewhere.  I mean, do they think it's like some kind of fairytale prohibition?  Like Pandora: you will be happy just as long as you never, never, never open this box?  Like Bluebeard's wife: you will be happy as long as you never, never, never enter this room? Do they think they can only be happy just as long as no one ever, ever, ever allows gay people to marry?

And in that case, hasn't Massachusetts proven them wrong already?

Sheesh.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

The only thing being threatened by gay marriage is the right of small, petty people to feel special.

This Something Positive strip neatly describes the difference between some self-professedly "religious" people and genuinely religious people.

Oh, believe me, I grok the distinction. I think of it as "religious" vs. "spiritual", myself -- rule-obsessed vs. actually trying to live as Christ suggested.

I can't figure out if I can repost that sentence or not. :->

I saw someone edit it so it read "legally-sanctioned relationship". Would that work?

I suspect it's more a case of fear that their kids will grow up to be Different From Them, if they see working examples of any other way to do things.

Done. My marriage is far more likely to be hurt by more intrusive fascist laws on marriage than it is by two people who love each other quietly getting on with their lives.

Yes. There are many opinions -- on many subjects -- that I understand, but disagree with. The idea that the marriage I'm in is somehow lessened in value by other people's marriages is an opinion that's beyond my comprehension.
