Self--don't forget to make your 2008 IRA contributions.  Sooner would be better than later; the market won't stay this low forever.

<whine> but I hate having to figure out how to *do* it every year </whine>

And while you're at it, post how to do it here so you can look it up next year.  (hint, hint)

In other news, have I mentioned that I'm hunting for a new house?

Good luck in the hunt.

This is not bad advice in general. Short term, likely to loose money.... Long term. it will be more than you put in. (And its a good tax writeoff...)

Yes, the market will still go down some before it comes up again, but I think this is still a good time to put money in. Better than it was last year, anyway :-)

Thank you for your good wishes regarding the house hunt.

Thank you. We have several pretty good prospects so far, so I'm feeling pretty hopeful.

Same rural area, or moving closer to the city? What things are you looking for in your new house?

Have you always wanted, say, more land, or two floors with gorgeous staircase, or someplace with broadband instead of dialup? Maybe just more dedicated rooms for office, music and library?

May your search be productive, and the banks be favorable to your efforts!

We're moving to within walking distance of the college where my husband teaches. It's a bigger city than here, but "bigger city" is spelled 8,000 people.

We want someplace with room to pace and room for our bookcases, with 3 bedrooms or so, so that we can have at least one room for visitors, with high ceilings so I don't bark my knuckles when I'm taking my t-shirt off, and preferably wood or non-carpet floors because allergies run in my family. I want good insulation and windows that let in plenty of daylight, 2 stories would be nice, because I like that "surveying my territory" feel. A fenced backyard would be nice because we're thinking of getting a dog. I'd like it if the main axis of the roof ran east-west so we could maybe put in a solar hot water heater and solar cells sometime in the future, and I'd like there to be enough headroom in the price for me to be able to afford to put the kitchen counters in at the right height so I don't get backaches all the time.

And yes, I want to live in an area that has broadband or at least DSL; I am *so* tired of dialup.

But really, most important is the walk to the college. It needs to be 20 minutes or less, and reasonably safe. (Not worried about muggings; worried about cars hitting my beloved in the dark.)

The bank called this afternoon and we're tentatively approved :-)
