So I was all set.  I was going to strictly--strictly!--avoid Black Friday.  I don't like crowds.

But then Kip's computer, Odin, died.  Wouldn't even boot.  Wouldn't even boot from a CD.

Kip is a very phlegmatic guy.  But he was disturbed.  He wanted to take his computer to the computer store to have it fixed.  Totally understandable, actually; when my computer won't work I get frantic.  Plus the computer store is in the mall, so we could also get him socks (because when socks have holes so big you can stick three toes out at once without trying to, you need new socks) and shoes (when it starts raining in the Fall is when you realize that you need new shoes.)  So three things at once.  I went along as moral support, and to help with getting Odin as close to the mall doors as possible.  Odin is a desktop; luggable when packed in his box with his special styrofoam, but you don't want to lug him any farther than you can help.

We got socks.  We got shoes.  We got Odin checked in to be examined.  We waited about 2 hours at the computer store, and got a computer whiz to look at him.  What he's doing is called a kernel panic.  It isn't the RAM.  It isn't the wifi card.  There are about six other things it could be and they have to order parts to even check, so Odin will be staying at the computer-vet for the next five to ten days.

And after 3 hours of Black Friday, I was totally frazzled.  I can't imagine why anyone would *want* to do this.

ack! computer withdrawal!

I hope they're able to fix it without too much expense for you. Makes me think about having a backup PC, just in case, y'know?

Thanks for your good wishes. We're hoping for that too.

If Kip's computer is named Odin, what is the name of your computer?

Kernel panic - ick!

When my powerbook was diagnosed with kernel panic a couple of years ago, I had to get the motherboard replaced. Was so glad I had the Apple extended care warranty, which covered everything except my time and stress.

Hope Odin is fixed without too much difficulty or cost!

I sure hope it's not the motherboard; that would be expensive. Cheaper than replacing the computer, but still.

Obviously, Black Friday also was Technarok.

I hate crowds; I avoided Black Friday and put off shopping with my mom until Saturday, which was bad enough. I understand completely your feeling frazzled. Sure hope the computer is easily fixable.
