I recorded this morning but basically only knew I wanted to re-record my harmony for Last Spaceship.  It goes about as low as I *can* go and I don't like how I'm sounding on the low notes.  I tried a couple of passes in situ, then tried something weird where I moved everything up 2 semitones, sang harmony to that, then removed the pitch-shifting on the main vocals and mando and pitch shifted the harmony down 2 semitones.  It sounds... not exactly like me.  But when I ptich shift something called the "formants" back up 2 semitones, it sounds more me-ish.  I am going to have to decide which version to go with at some point, or whether to just leave out the harmony altogether.

I also mixed Quetico for a couple of hours.  For some reason my compressor is making me buzz on the high notes.  When I skip the compressor, the buzz goes away.  Quetico is challenging to mix because I'm singing three parts, and whichever part is highest is loudest, sometimes to the point it drowns out the other parts.  So I went in and set the volume down by hand on all the loud parts.  That took a while and I'm not all the way done.  But it does sound much more ...what's the audio equivalent of "legible"?  "Audible" doesn't work because I mean all the parts being audible, not one smear of sound.  But anyway, whatever that is, it sounds more that now.

I must mix like a mad thing this week because I have basically this friday and possibly a couple of days next week to re-record anything that needs it.  And I have to mix everything to know if anything needs it.  And I have kind of lost track of what has and hasn't been mixed.

And then this evening I worked on The Box.  There hasn't been much change in the materials--I marked a couple of edges on one piece of 2 x 2 but haven't cut them yet (but I can leave out all the knots--yay!).  I cut the extendable handle shorter, and it still extends, if somewhat grumpily now.  But it was a bit grumpy before.  I can't really expect a seven dollar used extendable handle to be cheerful about it.  I carefully measured the handle and have worked out where to insert it in the top plate.  I laid out the octave mando on the sketch and propped everything to approximately its proper height with odds and ends and have satisfied myself that it will probably work.  I have weighed the plywood (18.2 pounds) and cleaned off my workbench and replaced the battery in my micrometer and soon I will actually do something.  Tomorrow, maybe even.

Criminy, mixing sounds complicated. "Distinct," is that the word you're looking for, that each layer is distinct?

"Acuitable"? Since what you're trying to do is render the parts accessible to the average (or better still sub-average? That would be kind...) listener's "aural acuity".

(I'm extrapolating wildly here from "visual acuity".)
